Background of the Study
Public addresses by Nigerian political figures are a critical component of political communication, where phonetic clarity is essential for conveying complex messages to diverse audiences. This study assesses the phonetic clarity in Nigerian political commentaries by analyzing public addresses across various political events. Clear articulation, precise intonation, and consistent pronunciation contribute to effective message delivery and influence public perception (Okoro, 2023). However, regional accents and individual speech patterns can lead to variations in phonetic clarity, affecting the overall impact of political discourse. By comparing speeches from different regions and political contexts, the research investigates how phonetic features such as vowel quality, stress patterns, and intonation contribute to—or detract from—the clarity of political commentaries (Chinonso, 2024). The study employs acoustic analysis and audience feedback to evaluate the effectiveness of these public addresses, with the aim of identifying areas for improvement in political communication strategies (Afolabi, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of phonetic clarity in political communication, there is limited research on how Nigerian political commentaries maintain or lose clarity in public addresses. Existing studies often focus on content and rhetorical strategies, with minimal attention paid to phonetic details (Okoro, 2023). This gap hampers efforts to understand the impact of regional accents and individual pronunciation on public comprehension. Without systematic analysis, it is challenging to develop training programs that enhance phonetic clarity among political speakers. This study aims to address these issues by conducting a comparative analysis of public addresses, thereby providing insights into the factors affecting phonetic precision in political discourse (Chinonso, 2024).
